It’s not surprising that studies have found that only 8% of people stick to their New Years’ resolutions. Many people have actually never been able to successfully keep their resolutions. Our problem may be the way we think about resolutions and the way we approach trying to make changes for the better. Here at Summit Smiles Dental, we suggest putting together a list of things you’d like to accomplish before 2016 is over, and we’d recommend adding some dental health-related items to that list!

We’ve compiled a few suggestions of resolutions that, with time and effort, will be easy to keep and very beneficial to your overall health:

  • Brush and floss daily: Set a goal to brush your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes. There are many mobile apps that can help you accomplish this goal, but simply setting a timer works just as well. You should also commit to flossing at least once a day. If you never floss, start with flossing once or twice a work and then work your way up to once a day.
  • Quit smoking: The use of tobacco products is the main cause of severe periodontal (gum) disease in the United States. Not only will kicking this nasty habit benefits your oral health, but it will improve your overall health as well.
  • Go easy on the sweets: Try to set limits on your sugar consumption. When the enamel of your teeth is exposed to excessive sugar, the longer harmful acids have to attack the teeth and cause cavities and decay.

Setting an appointment for a dental cleaning and exam should be at the top of any healthy checklist. Before you begin your year of healthy dental habits, it’s important to start with a healthy, clean foundation.
