In last month’s post, I shared with you the fact that you are worth investing in your smile, and we explored value and pricing facts on cosmetic dentistry.

Today I want to shed more light on two specific dental procedures: smile design and dental implants. Patients often have questions about the timelines and impacts of these procedures, and I’m here to provide you with the answers you need. Here are three most common questions I hear and the answer to each:

How long will my smile design take, start to finish?

Smile design is a transformative dental procedure that can completely revamp your smile, boosting your confidence. Overall, the entire smile design process can take anywhere from one to three months, depending on your specific needs and the availability of dental labs. The timeline for this procedure can vary depending on individual cases, but I will outline a general overview:

  • The journey begins with a thorough consultation and assessment of your oral health, dental history and aesthetic goals. This initial step helps us tailor a personalized plan for your smile.
  • Using advanced technology, we will create a digital 3D model of your teeth and gums, allowing you to visualize the potential outcome. This step typically takes a few days to a week.
  • We will create a mockup of your new smile, which can be temporarily fitted to ensure it meets your expectations. Once you are satisfied, we will prepare your teeth for the permanent restoration.
  • Depending on the complexity of your case, the final restoration, which may include veneers, crowns or other treatments, can take two to four weeks to fabricate in our dental lab.
  • Once the restorations are ready, we will fit them onto your teeth and make any necessary adjustments to ensure a perfect fit and a stunning smile.

How long will my implants take, start to finish?

Dental implants are a solution for replacing missing teeth, offering you lasting durability and functionality as well as a terrific smile. In total, the dental implant process can span from four to nine months. Each case is unique, and some patients may experience variations in their treatment timeline. The timeline for this procedure typically involves several phases:

  • During the first visit, we will evaluate your oral health, take X-rays and determine if you are a suitable candidate for dental implants.
  • The next step involves surgically placing the implant into your jawbone. This procedure usually takes about one to two hours per implant.
  • After implant placement, a healing period of three to six months is essential to allow the implant to fuse with your jawbone. During this time, temporary restorations may be provided for cosmetic purposes.
  • Once osseointegration, or fusion, is complete, we will attach the abutment to the implant, which serves as the foundation for the final restoration. The fabrication of the crown or prosthetic may take two to four weeks.
  • As a last step, I will place your custom-made crown or prosthetic onto the abutment, completing the dental implant process and revealing your transformed smile.

How much time off work (and family) will I have to take?

The amount of time you will need to take off work and from your family responsibilities will depend on the complexity of your dental procedure and your body’s healing capacity. Here’s a general idea:

  • The downtime for smile design is relatively minimal. You may experience some mild discomfort or sensitivity after each visit, but it should not interfere significantly with your work or daily activities.
  • After implant placement surgery, swelling and discomfort are common. Most patients can resume light activities within a day or two, but it is advisable to take it easy for the first week. For physically demanding jobs, it might be best to take a few extra days off.
  • As for family responsibilities, having a support system can be beneficial during the initial days after implant surgery. If you have young children or other family members who rely on your assistance, consider enlisting help during your recovery period.

Remember, you deserve to feel confident and happy with your smile – you’re worth it!

Stay smiling!
